Scholarship Recipients Update - León, Nicaragua - September 2017

Hello everyone! Here is the September 2017 Scholarship Recipients Update. These students have been working hard to learn English in the classes provided by you!

Thank you for your support! Your contributions continue to make a world of difference to this community. Runucate will be expanding in the near future - keep your eyes open for an exciting update in the upcoming weeks!

I recently visited the scholarship recipients at ITA Nicaragua in September. Each student was asked to answer questions about their English class and provide feedback. Their primary English Advisor, Anna, also gave her input about the learners continued progress.

How has the English scholarship helped you?

The English scholarship has given me a lot because I have learned several aspects and important topics and practical situations that one looks at in our own words. It also helped me a lot because I have scare economic resources and I can thrive economically.

How many days do you attend class per week?

In our TEFL school, I come four days per week.  There is different theme that is taught, US subject, verb, gerunds, grammar, etc.

What do you like about your English class?

I like English class because it is important. I learn many things about life, animals, the sea, etc.

Anna, English Advisor:

Guadalupe continues to be in the beginner class. His conversational skills are much higher than his writing skills. He has some trouble following directions, which may be why he continues in the same level. However he comes everyday and participates. He is very invested and a joy to have in class.

How has the English scholarship helped you?

This scholarship is a benefit to me because I am an unemployed person, and it brings me the opportunity to follow my English lessons for free. It’s amazing. I think the scholarship gives me an unique opportunity in my life to improve my English skills. Reading, speaking and listening.

How many days do you attend class per week?

I come to the classes every day of the week.I rarely miss class. Only if is raining a lot maybe I miss it also if I am sick. If those don’t happen, I attend class every day. I am very responsible.

What do you like about your English class?

The English class does not have you repeat phrases like “I am”, “you”, etc. You have to use your lesson to role play and create your own scenario. You are always with native English speakers so you should only ask them questions in English and if you don’t know a word you have to explain to them your idea.

Anna, English Advisor:

Pedro continues to come to class everyday. It is extremely rare that he doesnt come. Pedro is an excellent writer, yet is still working on his fluency in terms of speaking, again partly due to his introverted personality. However, all of our teacher trainees love to teach to Pedro because when he comes out of his shell, he comes up with the funniest and craziest ideas and comments in class. He's really fun to teach. Pedro is in the advanced level.

Gilia

Gilia September 12, 2017

How has the English scholarship helped you?

It has helped me a lot because I am currently unemployed because of this reason it is important. During the time I've been here I feel that I've learned a lot. And it has served me to relate with other teachers, for such reason, thank you for the opportunity you have given me.

How many days do you attend class per week?

I attend four classes a week.

What do you like about your English class?

I like it a lot because I feel that I am very much acquainted with this language. I know that in fact it will be of much help. The classes are very straightforward and I learn to relate to other teachers. It is an excellent academy because there is everything I need to know this this language.

Anna, English Advisor:

Gilia moved up to the Intermediate level earlier this year. Her writing and reading skills are strong, but she struggles the most with listening and speaking, partly because she is a bit shyer but also because she really takes the time to think things out and wants everything to be correct, which makes her more accurate than fluent. She is the first person to arrive everyday and is very dedicated to coming to classes.

Francisco

How has the English scholarship helped you?

For me it has been very helpful because I have been able to learn the English language. It has been a dream. I can communicate with foreign people. It is a great help to my family's economy, I can also now help my children with their tasks. I appreciate all the support that the scholarship provides.

How many days do you attend class per week?

Four days a week

What do you like about your English class?

I like the way teachers teach classes, I like how they express themselves, they help us to put value on how to speak English. I have learned pronunciation and writing. The English classes have been very important in my daily life.

Anna, English Advisor:

Francisco also moved up to the Intermediate class this year. He, across the board, is pretty even in terms of skill, although writing may continue to be his strongest. He's a very consistent student and always has a smile on his face in class, ready to participate.

Meylin

Meylin is pictured above (blue shirt) participating in an interactive English lesson.

Meylin was busy with classroom activities and I did not want to interrupt class. This is what her teaching advisor, Anna, had to say:

"Meylin now moved up to the advanced level, due to her drive and motivation to learn. She puts in extra work in class and outside of class to keep advancing with the English language. She is at school everyday, and always asks the best questions in class. She is so curious and anxious to learn which attributes to a great energy in the advanced classroom."

The next update will be after the holidays. Stay tuned for an upcoming Runucate announcement!
