Courtney works as a pilot and flight instructor, currently living in the Cleveland, Ohio and Leon, Nicaragua. In 2014 a set of circumstances were presented allowing Courtney the opportunity to live in Nicaragua. While living in the capital, Managua, she shared a small room with a local family she was blessed to experience complete submersion within the culture and community allowing her the ability to witness the heartbreaking economic struggle due to Nicaragua’s societal deficit of education, funds, and prevailing conditions of poverty. Courtney pursued an accredited certification with TEFL, Teaching English as a ForeignLanguage, at a school in Leon, Nicaragua.
This certification has enabled her to teach English to children and adults. The combination of previous teaching experience as a flight instructor and implementation of mentorship in conjunction with the TEFL certification, has proven beneficial to her students and the community by facilitating and cultivating cultural competence.
Teaching English provides an extension of gratitude while uniting and improving local communities with language education to those without opportunity. She began an awareness campaign last year, Runucate. This campaign highlights opportunities the English language provides to poverty stricken communities. The focus is on communities currently demonstrating growth potential due to increasing rates of tourism. This suggests significant benefits would be gained by acquiring the language skill of English; therefore, creating job opportunities for local residents. Campaign contributions and awareness are raised by Courtney’s participation in various running events around the world as a novice runner. Her intention is to expand education opportunities in the future with the construction of a school and organized events focused solely on this cause.
